Hi all,
Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, conducted by Iván López-Reynoso and directed by Christof Loy. Premiered in Protected content , this tragedia lirica marks the twilight of Italian Romanticism, a work where medieval legend meets modern psychology.
Drawn from a brief episode in Dante’s Inferno, it tells of Francesca and Paolo, lovers doomed by passion and circumstance. Zandonai expands their story into a world of shimmering orchestral colour and lyrical intensity, while Gabriele D’Annunzio’s text turns their fate into a reflection on beauty, memory, and moral constraint. The result is an opera that feels both sumptuous and fragile, poised between ecstasy and ruin.
*It will be performed in Italian, with surtitles in both German and English.
