Book Club: Educated
Let’s kick off Protected content “Educated,” the wonderful memoir by Tara Westover that was named one of the best books of Protected content The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Economist, Publishers Weekly, Goodreads and the New York Public Library, among many others.
From the book’s publisher:
Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho (USA), she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her ‘head for the hills’ bag. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure Tara and her siblings received an education. Nevertheless, Tara’s quest for knowledge transformed her. She taught herself mathematics, grammar and science. Eventually, she was admitted to Brigham Young University. She also completed graduate studies at Cambridge and was a visiting fellow at Harvard University.
“Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes of severing one’s closest ties.”
You can purchase the Spanish translation of this memoir (“Una educación”) in bookstores here in Bogotá. Alternatively, you can order it in English from the usual suspects (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.).
