Dear fellow hikers,

be kindly invited by Santiago and me to an astronomical hike on Sunday Sept 30th. It will have a length of around 17km, with 800m moderate ascends and descends. The activity is posted in the Rhein-Neckar outdoor group, and others in the region.

Assuming that the weather will be somewhat nice, we start going straight up Heidelberg Königsstuhl, via Gaisbergturm and the Sequoia Arboretum. After a short break enjoying the gorgeous view of Heidelberg and the Rhine valley from above, Santiago will open the gates into space for us: Thanks to him we have the chance to visit the premises of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and Königsstuhl observatory. There we will do a 45min-1h walk through a model of our solar system, combined with an introduction into planetary and stellar astronomy of our nearby space.

Returning back down to earth from this exploration of our galactic neighborhood, we continue the trail to Hohler Kästenbaum: There we will take a longer break to still our hunger with a pick nick. Finally we head back to Heidelberg in the late afternoon by passing the beautiful Felsenmeer.

As already mentioned, this circular hike has a total length of around 17km, with an all in all moderate level. Nevertheless, a bit condition is needed for the first climb up to Königstuhl (~ 450m within the first 5km). Afterwards it generally goes down, except for a few shorter ascents in-between, and a last long one on our way back after passing the Felsenmeer. All in all, count with around 800m ascents and descents on the whole track.

Be aware, that it will be a hike in mountainous terrain, on generally forest ways, partly with stones and cobbles. It is not a walk on flat paved ground. Hiking beginners are more than welcome, but please only sign up if you have at least a moderate condition and fitness level. Mandatory are good walking shoes with sturdy soles (ideally hiking shoes with good ankle support as a few of the paths are uneven and may be covered in leaves), weather appropriate attire. Finally drinks and lunch for yourself (there will be only the little kiosk on Königstuhl to buy anything on the way), a pick nick blanket and of course, good mood with some interest and curiosity about astronomy.

As usual, I do not take over any responsibility or liability, apart from that I will guide everybody into and out of the forest who goes with, and stays within the group :)

Last but not least: Should the weather forecast be really bad for that day, the activity might be cancelled on short term notice.

If you have any questions send me a message! Otherwise, see you hopefully fresh and fit in two weeks!
