Bicycleran (The Cyclist) By M.Makhmalbaf Pre-View + Zoom Debate
The movie that made Makhmalbaf famous and loved among his country. The tenacious struggle of a miserable becomes the redemption of all the humble and of those who barely live the day. An everyday hero goes on an epic feat to heal his wife. Even if you see a direction in some parts immature (which will improve over time, let's not forget that the director is self-taught) the result is an intense human portrait on the Afghan populations and their exploitation in Iran.
Nasim (Moharram Zaynalzadeh) is watching his friend performing a motorcycle act, but his mind is on his wife Noghre, laying gravely ill in the local hospital. The hospital is asking for more money in order to continue treatment, and Nasim, a well-digger, is unable to raise enough money from his work. He attempts unsuccessfully several other schemes, including driving a truck of illegal immigrants, or faking a suicide under a truck. Nasim attracts the attention of a circus promoter who recognizes him as the once Afghan champion of a three-day endurance bicycle marathon. The promoter proposes to Nasim a seven-day marathon, which he accepts.
