A pictorial scenic composition equal to the paintings of Pellizza da Volpedo (opening scene), Bruegel the elder (village scenes and dances), Caravaggio (the deep blacks of the poor and shabby interior settings). What to say ? We can only contemplate with amazement such a beautiful and pure cinema, and thanks to the ecstasy of the senses, three hours of film seem to last one hour. The soundtrack by Eleni Karaindrou is goosebumps and a work of sublime art itself. The combination gives an absolute MASTERPIECE
A contemporary Greek odyssey told through the heartbreaking human sufferings of a family:
a band of refugees that returns to Greece after the russian revolution adopts an orphaned girl, Eleni. The film follows her through adolescence and the marriage to her musician adopted brother Alexis.
