Madama Butterfly is the first of Puccini's work with 'foreign flavor' and one of the representatives of Puccini. It is also one of the most performed opera on world opera stages. Puccini based his opera on the short story Madama Butterfly by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco ( Protected content ). And he used Japanese folk music Japanese Bridge in Edo, Lion and Sakura etc. directly to depict Cio-Cio San, a geisha yet innocent girl. Cio-Cio San is given deeper understanding of love and makes her a weaker yet much exquisite life. The composition of the opera is more elegant and light.
