Wednesday Hike in Rock Creek Park - The Roller Coaster!
UPDATE: I did a dry run of this hike and it is exactly 3 miles (3.6 with the initial loop). This should allow us to move at a slower pace than normal if necessary. Also, there are several bail out points along the route that will allow to take a flatter route back to Peirce Mill if the hills become too much for you. I hope to see you there!
Let's enjoy an evening hike in the waning days of summer. We will take a route with a lot of hills that is a bit more strenuous than our previous hike, but is shorter in distance so that we have enough time to finish before dark.
We will meet at the Protected content . We start with a short loop and come back to the shelter at around 6:20 to pick up any latecomers. We will head then north on the Western Ridge trail, cross over Rock Creek and return on the Valley trail, arriving back at Peirce Mill between 8:00 and 8:15.
Length: Up to 3 miles, depending on our pace.
Pace: Protected content
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous, hilly, dirt and rock trail.
What to wear: Comfortable athletic wear, athletic sneakers or hiking shoes.
What to bring: Water (it will be hot - it's August in DC!), Insect repellant - lots of insects this summer :-(
There is plenty of parking in the area of the shelter in the parking lot and on the street. Peirce Mill is about 0.8 miles from the Van Ness/UDC metro and about 0.5 miles from the closest stop of the H2 bus.
