Ready to Join?

We are launching our Autumnal activities by organising this interesting excursion to Cape Sounio and the nearby town of Lavrio, this October.

Join us for a great Day Out to discover one of Attiki's hidden gems! Although I was born and raised in Athens, I have never been to Lavrio, although I am well aware of its history. The town's role since Antiquity had been to provide metals and other natural resources to Athens since Protected content , its port being an important European trade spot. Today Lavrio constitutes a historical landmark because of the infamous social struggles and rebellions of the local miners against the Mine owners (Greek, Italian, French) and governments, who repressed them in the 19th and 20th century. The town is often described as the one of the largest open-air industrial museums in the world.

Meeting point:
We will meet between 9am and 9:15am at the Protected content You can get there by train (Victoria Station), or Trolley/Bus.
We will take the coach to our destination:
tickets €5-7 one way
9:45am to Lavrio
10:00am to Sounio

Cape Sounio:
We will stop at Sounio to visit the Temple of Poseidon (ticket: 4 euros, opening hours: 9:30am Protected content or enjoy a coffee at the local coffee shop, or both.

Bus to Lavrio:
There are buses that link the two places, which will take us to Lavrio.

We will visit the ancient theatre of Thorrikos, where we will stop to admire the views (Northern part of Lavrio town).
We could also visit the old mines that are open to the public (Eastern part of Lavrio town). The hike is 2.5 miles (4km) long, and will lead us to the village of Agios Konstantinos, where the area is rich in ancient mines (including the ones that provided the marbles and stones for the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounio).
Finally, we could visit the museum of Mineralogy (opening times: 10:00am Protected content .

We could have coffee and lunch in Lavrio, but please feel free to bring your own packed lunch, if you like, so we could have a pic-nic.

We will take the coach back to Athens early in the evening.

Join us alone or with friends for this great day out!

PS: Please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, carry an umbrella and a bottle of water. Packed lunch is optional.

I look forward to seeing you there
