Music in the Air
Milan Photo Week is approaching its third edition, many events in the city about the world of photography: among them, I have choosen for our group “Music”, at Protected content in Duomo Square. Around Protected content in black and white and a video by Silvia Lelli and Roberto Masotti. The exhibition will take place in the "Apartment of the Princes", at the first floor of the Palace: a kaleidoscopic narrative for images taken in Italy and abroad since the early 70's that together draw a transversal portrait of live music, from classical to jazz, from opera to rock.
Lelli and Masotti have long been official photographers of the Teatro alla Scala, paying attention to the musical performance, fixing in their photos the expressive intensity and the force of the gesture that is expressed on the stage. The photographs selected for Music portray composers, performers, conductors, singers, but also entire orchestras, scenes and instruments belonging to very different musical and artistic universes.
Demetrio Stratos and Riccardo Muti, Miles Davis and Pina Bausch, Lou Reed and Astor Piazzolla, Frank Zappa and Carlos Santana, among the artists portrayed. The exhibition fully demonstrates the extreme variety of live music, investigated both in practice and in concert with a highly personal and engaging poetic approach, documenting the history of the show with photographs that fully reflect the vibrations of the stage. Recently the immense photographic archive of Lelli and Masotti, among the richest and most culturally important in the world (more than 400,000 images), has been recognized of particular historical interest with a provision of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage.
