Lecture: Architecture of the Order of St John in Valletta
The Department of Art and Art History is organising a lecture on the Architecture of the Order of St John in Valletta: Italian and French influences on the local scenario during the second half of the 16th and the 17th century by Prof. Sabine Frommel who is director of studies of the study of the of art history of the renaissance at the École Pratique des Hautes Études - Sorbonne, France.
The conference will show the ways in which the order of Malta acted as a patron of architecture and urban planning in Valletta. The relations between the Grand Masters and the popes and princes, like the Medici, played an important role for the appointment of the Italian architects like Bartolommeo Genga, Francesco Laparelli, Baldassare Lanci who introduced to Malta military technologies and architectural typologies and languages from the Italian Renaissance.
Entrance is free and seats are on first come first served basis.
