Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s (CAMH) Teen Council is pleased to present Shapeshifters, a group exhibition featuring work by over forty Houston-area teen artists. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, video, photography, textile, and digital media, including an interactive website. Shapeshifters addresses both instant and continuous responses to rapid shifts in our cultural, socio-political, and physical landscapes.

Shapeshifters is the 11th biennial youth art exhibition organized by CAMH’s Teen Council. Drawing from an open call, the Teen Council received over Protected content responding to the questions: What forms you and/or your generation? How do you define your space? Can you change shapes? Teen Council chose the theme of shifting shapes knowing that their peers would respond and interpret this idea in a multitude of ways. Some artists responded by looking closely at architecture and the shapes in our physical world; others recognized changing shapes as an internal and emotional adjustment. Finally, other artists took the theme as a reflection of their developing bodies and examined their self-image. The artists Teen Council chose to include are contending with boundaries through new lenses. Embracing the coming-of-age narrative that is ubiquitous across teen culture, the works in this show are steeped heavily in the “swipe-culture” that has come to define the current generation.
