12&14 (TAO Dance Theater) 42 Autumn Festival Contemporary Dance
The Choreographer Tao Ye returns again and again to the body, to its physical expression as the center of a system that is expressed through movement. He does not resort to external arguments, fictions, stories or narratives to elaborate his pieces.
First the numeral, which already points to the idea of abstraction.
Second, a minimalist conception of movement. Less is more, if one accepts the principle formulated by the architect Mies van der Rohe for his own architecture. It's about removing to get to the essentials.
Third, how Tao Ye handles the body: he asks his dancers to focus on the grooves of the spine, to eliminate the movements of the limbs, and replaces the music with the voices of the dancers themselves, which become the sound of the piece.
In 12 & 14, faithful to that idea of minimalist variation, he renounces the idea of repetition and explores that of rhythm and change, of movement and stillness. The music seems to arise from the oscillation of the metronome or the sound of the second hand.
From the beginning, he already had his consciousness rooted in the core element of his creation: the body. “It is the origin of our existence, and it can also be the temple of our spirit”, he maintains. And that body transformed into art, according to Ye, “can often give us a powerful driving force in life.” More than 40 countries & more than Protected content have hosted the dance of the TAO Dance Theather.
