Weekend Break in Edirne: Food, Architecture & Winery
THE TRACES OF EDIRNE'S MAGNIFICENT HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND HUMBLE ATMOSPHERE SHINES LIKE A PRECIOUS PEARL WAITING TO BE EXPLORED BY US, THIS WEEKEND IN WESTERN TURKEY!
This is Edirne, the descendant of ancient Adrianopolis, one of the first capitals of the Ottoman Empire and a city with a fascinating history reflected in an even more fascinating present-day.
Selimiye Mosque, Turkey’s gateway to Europe, is an Ottoman tour de force and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage is in our tour agenda as a must-see complex with its kulliyyah and bazaar. Our professional guide will be telling us all about the secret details hidden in its architecture. Another must see is an award winning Historical Health Museum. It is a museum where learning medical applications & procedures of Ottomans feels quite exciting. Also, being in a very old historic building gives you a an interesting sense of serenity. Selimiye Arastası is a closed bazaar to the southwest of the mosque, and is home to more than Protected content . The stalls are filled with fragrant soaps (known to have dated back to Ottoman times), souvenir objects decorated with Ottoman motifs and local delicacies. The tastiest examples of Ottoman royal cuisine such as almond paste, sand tarts (Kavala kurabiyesi), pistachios, hoşgüvar cookies (made with almond, honey and saffron), and deva-i misk halva (made with 41 spices) should be at the top of the any souvenir list.
Exhibiting its historical richness in its cuisine, Edirne’s trademark dish is liver but we should brace ourselves also for some other delicious surprises. We had been to almost all the wineries of the wine route in Northern Trace. This weekend we will be visiting the one in this spectacular city, again. We will taste and rate its wines with a beautiful outdoor garden ambiance. A late bbq supper option will also be available for us.
If you haven’t visited Edirne, you should! Would you visit it again? YES!
