BLUE CRUISE: Beautiful Gulf of Gokova
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO TRAVEL AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE ANTIQUE IONIA OF SOUTHERN TURKEY, THE SIGHTS ARE LEGENDARY AND AS REMOTE AS HOMEROS’ TIME OVER Protected content AGO. THIS TURQUOISE-BLUE SEA ODYSSEY IS SPELL- BINDING, YET THE REALITY IS FASCINATINGLY TANGIBLE AS THE DREAM MERGES INTO THE LEGEND.
How does it feel to look down from the boat into the clear depths of the water and see an ancient, submerged city? Or to listen in the evening to the endless chirping of the cicadas in the charming little coves that are each day awaiting your discovery? To be able to see a harmony of blue and green to be found nowhere else in the world? And above all, to be able to enjoy the most delicious, meals of fish and sea-food?
If you wish to experience all this then you should set off on the “Blue Voyage.”
Here is how it goes: The captain and crew are making the final preparations. The food and drinks are being stored away in the cupboards. Slowly the anchor is weighed, and you take your last look at the 14th century castle of the Knights of St Joseph. You are a little sad to leave Bodrum, but at the same time you are excited at the idea of the voyage. Even the “ Welcome Cocktail” is not enough to calm your excitement.
Now you are in the bay of Gokova. Where else in the world can you find such a harmony of green and blue? There are dozens of little coves where you can anchor, and lovely walks among the forests of pine. But the most interesting of all the sights in the region is undoubtedly the Seven Islands, Sedir Adasi and Cedar Island. As the boat makes its way thru those islands leaving the little bays with their pine covered slopes behind, you finally arrive at Cleopatra Beach, absolutely unique in the world for its grains of sand as large as grape-stones. That is why its sand is so carefully protected. It is absolutely forbidden to carry any of it away. According to the old legend, Mark Anthony brought the sand from North Africa especially for Cleopatra, and it was here, in this tiny bay, that the lovers went bathing. Another surprise awaits you here in the discovery of a large ancient city on a tiny island. The theatre and the other ancient remains that have bravely withstood ali the ravages of time are waiting to take you back thousands of years.
The next stop is at the English Harbour, so called because it was here that the British fleet moored during the First World War. As you go in from the sea you are presented with a unique natural decor of coves and inlets. Here you can spend the whole day swimming in the sea or walking in the woods. Mersinlik Harbour, your next stop, is almost every bit as beautiful. Here you will spend the night, and the next morning you will be able to visit a famous ancient city whose history dates back to the 7th century. B.C. and which preserved its importance under the Greeks, the Persians, the Byzantines and the Ottomans. The famous statue of Aphrodite, a copy of which is to be seen in the Vatican Museum, was made here in the 4th century B.C. its breakwater, its theatre, its Byzantine church and Knidos all demand a visit.
You won’t find it easy to emerge from the spell cast by history and the beauty of nature. If, while you are cruising around all of those Blue Flagged bays of the area , you are attracted by the idea of abandoning everything and settling down here, get back home to your work as quickly as you can! Tomorrow may be too late!
