Cy Twombly ( Protected content ), born in Lexington, Virginia, is one of the most influential contemporary artists. Starting from Abstract Expressionism, he developed an idiosyncratic gestural style with “awkward” characters in writing, which he increased to monumental proportions on large-format canvases. No other artist of the 20th century got involved so unconditionally with the "zero point" of modern art as Twombly. Writing exercises by children, absent-minded scribbles and graffiti on house walls serve as contemporary starting points for him to update the empirical content of mythical stories and to draw an arc on the major themes of Mediterranean cultural history. With more than Protected content - paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs - from different creative periods, the Brandhorst Collection has the most important holdings of the artist in Europe. Stroll through the exhibition rooms with director Achim Hochdörfer and learn how Cy Twombly incorporated verses from well-known poets into the design of his late "roses" pictures.
