Istanbul Walking & Drawing Day - (Forever) Being Creative
Rumeli Fortress, ‘Fin-de-Siegle’ Ottoman Villas & Ai Wei Wei Exhibition
Due to enthusiastic reactions for the second time we organize a Walking-and-Drawing Day together with internations.org.
This event is for everybody, i.e. there is no certain level of sketching/drawing requiered.
Your hosts today will be multi-discipline artist VeraDG Art by Vera DG (Instagram: @veradg.art), and (m-d) anthropologist Gerard O’Hergelinck. Vera will help whenever you need advice on your sketchings. Gerard will provide historical, cultural, etc. information about things we wonder about.
Our aim for today is to discover the impressive Rumeli Fortress and beautiful Old Ottoman Villas along the Bosphorus. For those who like exhibitions we planned to visit nearby Sakip Sabanci Museum for the Ai Wei Wei exposition.
Rumeli Hisarı has been commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II. It was built within four months in Protected content , to control traffic in the Bosporus strait during the Ottoman siege on Constantinople in Protected content . The Byzantine Empire by the Protected content was reduced to the city itself and some distant enclaves. By closing down the Bosporus north of Constantinople and the Dardanelles at the south, Mehmet II The Conqueror tried to cut off the Byzantine fleets at Trabzon (Black Sea) and Thessaloniki (nowadays GR) and their strong Genoese allies at the time, who had colonies along the shores from Genua to Constantinople, as well as all around the Black Sea (like had the Venetians).

The Fortress is a huge and well preserved construction, so we plan to stroll, explore and draw here until lunch time. Gerard will tell some historical details about the fortress and its role in the conquering of Constantinople. Entrance fee to fortress: TL 10,-
Lunch between 13.00 – 14:00. At the entrance of Rumeli Hisar are some cozy restaurants. Depending on the number of participants we suggest to split up in small groups (max. 4 pers.) to make time-consuming rituals of ordering + paying as short as possible.
After lunch we plan to split our activities into a group for:
1) those who want to further draw/sketch and
2) those who want to visit Ai Wei Wei’s exhibition.
Ad Protected content you attend this event primarily for the walking + drawing activities, you’ll walk along the Bosporus with Vera. You’ll have unique opportunities for sightseeing one of the most splendid parts of the many waterfronts Istanbul possesses. Most of the wooden villas (Turkish: Yalı /Yaleuh) were built after Protected content , immediately upon the strait. Typically, their ground level had no floor as it was used as parking lot for the boats of the home owners. Main asphalt roads in Istanbul became into being around the Protected content . Untill that time people used to travel by boats: caiques (swift boats), sailing boats and at the end of the 19th century by steamboats). Travellers and foreign residents alike were exited about this waterlife. Especially when the Padishah (Sultan) departed with his fleet of long, slender caiques for a hunt in his woods at the Black Sea, or for his Friday prayers. To get an impression: the Royal fleet could move with a speed of 15 km/ph upstream the Bosporus. (further reading: “Caiques/Kayık” – Çelik Gülersoy).
Ad Protected content who want to combine walking + drawing with visiting the Ai Wei Wei exhibition come along with Gerard to Sakip Sabanci Museum. A one hour walk (3km) with time for photoshoots, information etc. We’ll plan a 2 hours visit at the museum. (If time runs out we go by bus or taxi to the museum). Entrance fee TL 30,-. Groups of Protected content 25,- Guided Group Tours are provided at TL 300,- !
Ai Wei Wei is a most renown contemporary Chinese artist. He is active in sculpture, installation, architecture, curating, photography, film, music and in social, political and cultural projects.
