What’s the situation in Malaysia?
*****************************
A significant number of Orang Asli or indigenous children in Peninsula Malaysia do not have access to pre-school education. Without basic reading, writing and mathematic skills, this puts them at a huge disadvantage when they enter Standard (Primary) One. As such, it is not surprising that many of them fail to catch up with the national school syllabus and eventually drop out from school.

Protected content children in Peninsula Malaysia have never been to school. Only 6 out of Protected content Asli children who enter Standard 1, complete their Form Five 11 years later.

Without access to proper education, many indigenous communities will continue to be trapped within the vicious cycle of poverty and struggle to be self-sustainable.

About SUKA Society
*******************
SUKA Society is a nationally registered non-governmental organisation set up to protect and to preserve the best interest of children.

"Empowered2Teach" is a SUKA Society initiative developed in response to the challenges faced by the Orang Asli community with regards to education. The project works towards providing greater access to education by empowering the Orang Asli communities living in remote areas to start their own pre-school classes within their villages.

The project currently supports Orang Asli pre-school classes located in the villages near Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Tapah and Gua Musang. They are also supporting an after-school program in Bera.

In total, there are over Protected content children between the ages of four and six years old attending the pre-school classes regularly. In the afternoons, the teachers provide after-school lessons to older school-going children.

Monthly supervision visits to the schools are made to mentor and support the teachers in their efforts. The teachers are further equipped through regular training sessions. The project also provides inspiring stories and updates from the pre-schools through the project’s website – Protected content

I look forward to meeting you all!
