Yangmingshan National Park is rich with unique and beautiful sights. A popular area is Qingtiangang 擎天崗, known for its wide, grassy meadows and wild buffalo. If you want to have a relaxing walk in the mountains, the non-strenuous trails of Qingtiangang are a relaxing alternative to the park’s most wonderful hikes.
The buffalo are what most people come to see, and you can find many of them leisurely munching grass close to the entrance. There are numerous signs saying not to touch them, but no one heeds these warnings. The buffalo ignore the gawking humans and continue their snacks. You can actually see wild buffalo in other mountains around Taiwan, but Qingtiangang offers the easiest access to them.
Jinbaoli Trail 金包里大道 or- Fish Road historic Trail (魚路古道)
This old trail was used by fish sellers in Jinshan to transport fish on foot to Beitou and Shilin for higher profits during World War II.
Bayan is an all-natural, undeveloped hot spring, although it is often crowded with locals on a weekend. Boiling hot water cascades down a hill from its source, and at the bottom, mixes with cold spring water (pure enough for drinking, I was told), creating a handful of pools with varying degrees of hotness.
