Villanos Del Jazz: Chief Adjuah (Christian Scott)
Did someone say that everything in jazz and its surroundings had been invented? You probably didn't know Chief Adjuah, the creative alias behind Christian Scott, born in New Orleans in Protected content . NPR hailed him as the herald of a new era for the genre thanks to his patent on so-called ‘Stretch Music’, an approach to jazz that combines it with ethnomusicology and a deliberate blindness to any stylistic boundaries. Add to this his unique way of playing the trumpet, emphasising breath over mouthpiece vibration to create a unique tone, the so-called ‘whisper technique’, and it is easy to begin to understand why this musician, nephew of saxophonist Donald Harrison, has been nominated five times for a Grammy and won two Edison Awards. Beyond awards and industry accolades, there are his twelve studio albums and a career spanning more than twenty years, combining creative adventure and civic engagement with the defence of human rights and the fight against social injustice.
