Leningrad, Protected content ... Rock’n’roll and blues herald the approaching Perestroika—bootleg Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie records are everywhere. When Mike and his wife Natasha meet the young musician Viktor, a love and music triangle is formed in a deeply hopeless era marked with suspicion. Premiering at Cannes Film Festival, Leto was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or. "The Summer" chronicles the birth of rock in the Soviet Union in the Protected content while telling a romance. It depicts the youth of Viktor Tsoi and the Leningrad underground rock culture of the early Protected content . Tsoi is played by Korean actor Teo Yoo. Of the three heroes of the film, Mike Naumenko is known as one of the best lyricists of Russian rock world, while Viktor Tsoi, the later founder of the band Kino, is considered as the pioneer of Russian rock. The songs in the film are performed by the actors themselves. The director Kiril Serebrennikov’s "Student" was screened at Filmekimi last year.
