On Saturday night, we are with the Brazilian jazz singer and composer Luciana Souza and her students she coaches.
Luciana Souza? With her bright and velvety voice she sings wonderfully soulful and rich in nuances and also astounds in the most virtuoso passages such as in Hermeto Pascoal's "Chorinho Pra Ele" on her album Duos II Protected content . The Grammy-nominated, long-living Brazilian woman was born in Protected content São Paulo, the daughter of a poetess and a bossa nova guitarist and composer. After four years at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, she earned her bachelor's degree in composition from Berklee College and her master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. She teaches at the Monk Institute, Berklee College, Manhattan School of Music and gives masterclasses worldwide.
Luciana Souza was introduced to a wider audience by Hermeto Pascoal in the early nineties, joining five albums by the great Brazilian multi-instrumentalist. She also created two albums with poems of Elizabeth Bishops and Pablo Neruda and is heard on Herbie Hancock's "River: Joni Letters" (like Leonard Cohen, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, Corinne Bailey Rae and Tina Turner).
Great acclaim and numerous awards went to Luciana Souza's long-term duo work with Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, who has also worked with Dianne Reeves, Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, Astrud Gilberto and Paquito D'Rivera. Lionel Loueke, Gregoire Maret, Massimo Biolcati and Kendrick Scott are among the illustrious quintets on their latest album "Speaking in Tongues" Protected content , also produced by Larry Klein. The vocalist is also on two albums Guillermo Kleins with "Los Guachos" and worked u.a. with Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Danilo Perez, Kenny Werner, John Patitucci, Steve Lacy and George Garzone. And she also belongs to the vocal group MOSS with Theo Bleckmann, Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan and Kate McGarry.
Luciana Souza has also performed with several classical orchestras, from the New York Philharmonic to the Bachakademie Stuttgart, the Boston Symphony Orchestra to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the American Composers Orchestra. She has also left her mark with her chamber music work, for example with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet or the Kronos Quartet, which is unique worldwide with its repertoire.
