Fanfare Ciocârlia have gone on to conquer the world's stages with their hugely exciting performances while each album has topped the European World Music charts, driven DJs crazy and inspired countless imitators.
Fanfare Ciocârlia is native in Zece Prăjini from the Moldova region in northeastern Romania. Zece Prăjini is a small Roma village where men have worked for generations either as self-sufficient farmers or in the factories of the surrounding towns. Many of the villagers have been engaged as musicians for weddings and baptisms in the area. Because of the field work their hands were however so stressed that the play of string instruments was out of the question and the choice fell on brass instruments .
Playing an instrument was part of the family tradition that passed from father to son. Zece Prăjini was known for his brass, but none of the villagers would have called himself a professional musician.
The origin of the brass bands of the Balkans lies in the marching bands of the Austrian and Turkish military. Fanfare Ciocârlia includes trumpets , tenor and baritone horns , tubas , clarinets , saxophones , a bass drum and percussion . The lyrics are usually written in Romanesque or Romanian.
The musical style of the band is mainly influenced by the traditional folk dance music of Romania and the Roma , but also includes Turkish, Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian elements. The group also processes melodies from international pop music and from Hollywood.
Just a couple of my favourites here😄:
"I put a spell on you"
" Bunica bate toba/ Grandma hits the drum"
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
