Ticino Weekend #7: S.Giuseppe and Camellia Flowers
Is any up for yet one more weekend in Ticino? There's the S.Giuseppe festival taking place on Saturday... and we can hike in Locarno/Centovalli on Sunday, so as to combine the wild Centovalli landscape with the blooming camellia flowers in Locarno.
Plan for Saturday is to meetup in Chiasso and walk to Vacallo, by following the footsteps of composer Giacomo Puccini, who is said to have spent a few holidays in the Ticinese town. Vacallo will be quite lively in the morning, as it celebrates the S.Giuseppe festival with plenty of Tortelli ( Protected content ); from there, we can walk up to Sagno, along the pilgrim mule track described on Protected content . We can decide then to either step into Italian territory and go to the Croce dell'Uomo for a view Lake Como, by following the colorful Viulin trail, or head up to the panoramic benches near Bedola ( Protected content ). The takes around 3 hours, with Protected content elevation gain.
As for Sunday, let's head to Locarno and hike along the scenic trail described on Protected content , across palm trees, bamboo forests, chestnut woods and stone bridges. Hike has Protected content of elevation gain and should allow us enough time to also stop by Locarno on the way back and visit its famous camellia garden.
