Hiking to the Balcony of Italy: Arogno-Sighignola
Anyone up for yet one more trip to the Mendrisiotto region? Hiking-wise, it makes for an ideal day trip from Milan, thanks to its scenic mountains, offering sweeping views over lakes and the highest alpine mountains, and the excellent public transportation network in Switzerland.
Plan this Sunday is to head to Arogno and explore the last segment of the so called emerald trail.
If the weather is fine, we'll try to reach the peak of Mt Sighignola, a mountain so scenic that it's also known as "Balcony of Italy".
The path is roughly described at Protected content (we will probably stick to the lakeside trail for both ways, since the other path is more challenging and not well maintained).
If the day is cloudy, we'll take the lower path to Pugerna and Campione d'Italia, where we can visit the picturesque Madonna dei Ghirli church before heading back: Protected content
Hike #1 should take around 4 hours, while hike #2 is 2,5 hours.
PS: Before heading to Arogno, with the 11:25 bus from Melano, we'll have a chance to visit an exhibition on the history of computers in villa Santa Lucia ( Protected content )
