Welcome to the fascinating world of American history – taught by a historian who happens to be an American, with strong German roots, and permanently settled in Belgium for thirty years. Educated in America and Germany, fluently quadrilingual, and having taught history at the BA/MA level in Belgium and the US for some 30 years, I bring various perspectives to my teaching. In some 15 sessions, we shall explore together the key elements of social, political, economic and diplomatic history from colonization to the Cold War, so as to better understand America and the Americans today. Main themes will include:
1. Discovery and Settlement
2. America and the British Colonial System
3. Independence
4. Federalism and Republicanism
5. An Expanding Economy, An Expanding Democracy
6. Ante-Bellum Expansion and the Coming of the Civil War
7. The Civil War and Reconstruction
8. Post-War Expansion and Growth
9. Progressivism, Expansionism and World War I
10. The Great Depression and the New Deal
11. World War II
12. The Origins of the Cold War

Looking forward to seeing you there! Please confirm your participation and let me know if you have to cancel by posting a message on the wall.
