A Quest to Finish the Maize Maze at Stan Hill Farm
When I was a small boy, we had a backyard garden where the corn grew very tall. Close to Autumn, when crickets were chirping and the corn was ripening on tall tassled stalks, I'd go walking through it, trailed by at least one cat who had a passing curiosity about entering the corn-scented jungle. When I emerged again I felt like an explorer... corn fields are meant to get lost in!
Much later I heard of corn mazes but never managed to visit one. I tried looking for corn mazes in the UK but never found any. Then someone told me about the British-Canadian difference between corn and maize - and sure enough, I found there was an entire association of maize mazes. It was on Protected content where I found the place I'm looking at for Sunday.
This is the right time of year: summer is turning into autumn, and in a few weeks, it will be harvest time. I've identified a corn maze at Stan Hill Farm, near Dartford, which is not far away from London. It looks like it's a walk of about two miles from the rail station to the farm and the maze itself apparently takes about two hours to complete. Apparently people can pick their own produce on the farm, so that might be an idea too.
The plan is to meet at Protected content , get there, walk to the farm, do the maze, maybe buy some produce and then head back to the station.
* your own packed lunch - I don't know if the farm has a cafe or if one is on the way
* some kind of bag or back pack if you think you'd might like to pick some produce.
