Lin Family House and Garden
Some of you have probably seen a recent article by Taiwan News with ten best preserved historic buildings in Taiwan: Protected content
One of them - Lin Family Mansion and Garden in Banqiao, New Taipei City - is definitely worth a visit! It is considered to be the only complete private garden in Taiwan. With a few buildings, pavilions, ponds, some wildlife and lots of history this place offers a really nice break from the modern city around it!
The house and garden are more than Protected content old and were built by the Lin family who at some point were the richest family in Taiwan. They came to Taiwan in the 18th century and made a fortune in rice trade. The grounds were open to public during the Japan's rule but fell into disrepair after World War II. Everything was lovingly restored in 80s and the gardens were opened 30 years ago.
Entrance is NTD 80 per person. We were lucky to have a guide to show us around as he was available at the time. In case he is not around when we visit, I will happily share what I have learnt from him. The place is full of symbols and special meanings.
Additional information on the place can be found here: Protected content . Banqiao is only three stops away from the Longshan Temple so don't let the address put you off; it's closer to central Taipei than it first appears to be!
