The Akademisches Orchester Basel ( Protected content ) is performing its next concert on Saturday 30 November and a presence from InterNations will be very welcome as always.

The programme consists of three fabulous pieces from the Classical and Romantic repertoire beginning with a sprightly overture to an opera by Salieri entitled, "Der Rauchfangkehrer” which translates as The Chimney Sweep.

Salieri was a contemporary of Mozart and the opera from which this overture is taken is still performed so it is remarkable that this will be the first ever(!) performance of the overture in Switzerland.

The second piece is Mozart’s clarinet concerto which is by far the most famous work written for the instrument. The soloist is Cyprus-born Orfeas Hiratos who now plays professionally in Switzerland and also with orchestras in France and Finland. He will play on a basset clarinet, which pre-dates the modern clarinet, and is the instrument Mozart wrote it for. The evocative slow movement was used to great effect in the film Out of Africa starring Hollywood superstars Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

The concert concludes with Brahms’ serene and idyllic Second Symphony which simply teems with the most wonderful harmonies, melodies and sonorous textures: a monumental masterpiece.

(The programme is being repeated on Sunday 1 December at the Mauritiuskirche, Bruggweg 104, Protected content at 18:00)
