San Rafael - Medium level
Located at the foot of the Iztaccihuatl we will find the Park called Dos Aguas (Two Waters). We will be able to start to climb from here Mexico’s third tallest mountain: The Iztaccihuatl,La Mujer Dormida (The Sleeping Woman).
In my opinion this is the most beautiful trail to climb the volcano. Going up we will find the aqueduct and water deposits that were used to provide water for the paper mill that gave rise to the town of San Rafael.
The trail is through beautiful pinewoods, the elevation gain will be around Protected content . and the total distance will be 17 km. We will be doing encirclement; we will not be going back on the same route.
Hiking boots and trekking poles are recommended; the trail will have loose gravel and leaves making it slippery. This is the cold season in Mexico and temperature may be very low. Dress with layers.
What you need for the hike:
• 1.5 Lts Drinking Water
• Waterproof jacket and trousers in case it rains.
• Warm Jacket, it usually is quite cold and windy at the top of the mountain
• Recommended light fabric shirts
• Hat & sunglasses
• Trekking poles
Adequate footwear is mandatory - Hiking boots or shoes. If you don’t wear proper shoes you will be discouraged to participate, because the trails are often steep and usually present loose rocks, making it easy to get injured.
Unfortunately, signaling is scarce along Mexican hiking routes, so don’t expect us to constantly follow the same route.
