Health Insurance for Expats (Addis Ababa)

Hello,

I am moving to West-Arsi province in October (for duration of Protected content , and am gathering information on health insurance coverage. I am an American, currently living in the Netherlands.

I'm curious what other American expats choose for insurance, and whether the insurance you have covers you also during trips home to the US.

Also, are there any concerns for pre-existing conditions if I were to keep my Dutch health insurance for 8 months and then switch to a US insurance company? (Reason is, Dutch insurance is cheaper so it would be nice to be covered there for as long as possible.)

For example, let's say I get malaria and have to return to the Netherlands for treatment. Mid-treatment, my Dutch insurance coverage ends (when my visa expires), and my US insurance starts. Would I be able to get any further malaria treatment covered on a US insurance even though it would be a pre-existing condition?

Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
