Getting to Taldykorgan (Almaty)

I have tentatively accepted a position in Taldykorgan, the provincial capitol for Almaty. I am exploring the option of living in Almaty City and commuting to Taldykorgan for work. Lonely Planet says there are buses that run between Almaty and Taldykorgan, but that trip is four hours one way. Is this accurate? Is it easy to buy and own a car in Kazakhstan? How long would it take to drive the trip? I understand there is a train that runs between the cities, as well, but I cannot find a schedule. How long is the train ride?
