moving to Amsterdam ?

Hi, We are a couple, French and Polish, and are in the moment living in Australia. I have great experience in management, admin,..etc..and He is a painting contractor. We are looking to relocate to Europe, so Amsterdam is our first choice because of the English speaking side of the country(do not want to move to the UK).
Our question is how is it to leave over there if you jut speak English and no Dutch? I saw quite a few ads for work which do not require any Dutch speaking, but what about everyday life, as going food shopping, meeting people? another question would be is it difficult to work as a contractor in painting? All your advices would be much appreciated! Thanks to all of you
