Searching appartment in Amsterdam

Hello everybody,
to make my membership in the Amsterdam community official, I am looking for a flat, appartment, etc. in the city. I want to move in late february and will be searching until then.
Being a student, my budget is limited, but creativity has always been a strength of me. ;)
How did you find your places, if I may ask?
I find the guide is a bit empty so far and would like to enter some hotspots and directions with all of you.
