Everydaylife in Astana during the winter

Hello, I know that the temperatures get really cold in the winter in Astana, but I would like to know how does it affect your everyday life? i.e. do children still go to school when the temperatures are extreme? are the road safe to drive (snow)? What do you do during the winter (activities),...
It may sound very naïve of me to ask these questions but I have never experienced these winter conditions but I know the weather can affect your lifestyle.
I am very excited about moving to Astana, so please forgive me if my questions seem a bit "naïve".
