S.G. Art Gallery, presents a solo exhibition by Tassos Babassis entitled “Swell”.
Babassis presents in his latest work: Twelve fairly large-scale paintings (1.20x1.20m) - acrylic and mixed media on canvas -placed in succession, that convey a sense of the swell, the heaving of the silent wave in the open sea.
It is not so much a re-presentation, some form of seascape, but rather a recording of an experience at sea from the “inside”, in white, blue and gold, during a voyage through time, from morning to evening, keeping – as a sort of leitmotif – the light steady reflected on the water, steady while the sea gets darker and darker.
As in Babassis’ previous work Swell propagates motion, but unlike earlier projects the medium is not video but the still picture. However, it is precisely through these successive pictures, functioning one could say as movie stills, that we follow the constant surging and receding of the water, while the changes in colours and shapes at different times and different circumstances are minutely recorded. But the light reflected is kept constant bringing forth, metaphorically, a fundamental ambiguity: The free play between the fleeting and the everlasting, the safe and the insecure, which is experienced as a steady flow on the unstable surface of the water, along with something that shines even in the deepest darkness.
