Language skills for renewing visa (Augsburg)

Hi all,
I'm about to renew my visa and am from out of the EU. Someone asked me if I had been learning German, I said I had but quit the course. This got me thinking about if I need to complete a course in order to regain my freelance visa. Does anyone know?
