Getting a new tourist visa after 180 days (Bangalore)

Hi all, I'm asking on behalf of my spouse who is coming to India after Christmas to stay with me: after his tourist visa expires, is it possible for him to just exit India for a couple of days and come back on another tourist visa? I read the post about visa runs, and am under the impression the 2 month gap no longer exists.

We thought he could get a one year visa but apparently Protected content tourist visa is the only option. So I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me if it's possible to get a new visa just by going to Sri Lanka for the weekend or so. He has a Finnish passport.
