Shipping from abroad - have to go to Chennai? (Bangalore)

Hi all!
I found a shipping company to move my boxes from Edinburgh to Bangalore - however, they are saying that as the port that will receive the cargo is Chennai, I will have to go in person to clear customs before I can get them sent to Bangalore. Has anyone else had this experience - is this indeed the case?
