FIRST TRIP TO THAILAND - 18 MARCH TO 4 APRIL (Bangkok)

Hello,

I am an American living in Paris and have decided to finally visit Thailand. I am flying to Chiang Mai for 1 week immediately upon my arrival in BKK, but then I still have to decide where to go for my remaining 9 days and was thinking 4 days in Ko Phrayam and the last 4 days in Bangkok. I don't want to stay in the touristy areas and I like traditional places, if anyone has any helpful hints and guesthouses of where to stay in both places? Or other suggestions for an island in the South?
