Lantern Festival- BKK or Chiang Mai?? (Bangkok)

Hello Everyone!!
Luckily Im scheduled to be in BKK during the Lantern festival this year :) I was wondering if anyone could suggest which would be the best way to experience the festival? Go to Chiang mai or stay in BKK ?
Also, if anyone or any groups planning to go to Chiang mai over the weekend for this festival?
