Which area of Bangkok to book my hotel?

Hi Everyone and greetings from InterNations Brussels.

I am coming to Bangkok the 2nd week of November. Since it is my first time there, I have no idea where to book a hotel that would be near the things I like to do. What I am after is urban fun; food, markets, knowing/chatting with whoever I bump into and lots of partying and drinking (but not clubbing since music is too loud for my favourite activity, chatting that is).

I would very much appreciate some advice on the good areas near the bars and the markets.

Shortly before my trip, I'll put another forum post to see if anyone would like to hangout with me. That would be lovely!
