Extending Visas in Spain (Barcelona)

Buenos Dias! Im from Canada on a one year visa which is expiring in two months. I love this city and am not ready to leave! I tried to extend my student visa at the municipal office today, which the officials said is normally not an issue EXCEPT for Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders. I was told that I would have to touch down in Canada, even if just for one day, to renew my visa at the Canadian Embassy. Id rather avoid this costly option. Are there any Canadians out there, or a lawyer perhaps, who have any experience or knowledge about this? Are there any ways to extend my visa from Europe??? Any information would be appreciated :)
