non-lucrative visa renewal (Barcelona)

Hi guys, I am from the US and getting my non-lucrative visa renewed. Has anyone else been through this process recently? It says on the website that I must not have a criminal record in Spain but does not specify whether I need to show proof. Anyone know if I need a Spanish police check?
