Visa overstays? (Barcelona)

Hi all!

I've read a number of mixed things across the Internet and am wondering if anyone has first hand experience with overstaying on a tourist visa. I heard for Americans they typically turn the blind eye.. Or have read that people have been able to get a new tourist visa by leaving and re entering the country, even without having been gone the full 90 days to reset the 180.

Are they pretty lenient at immigration on this or, if not, what are the reprocussions for overstaying?
