3 months in Switzerland (Basel)

After much talk of moving, eight visits and extensive planning - my Swiss partner (who has lived in Australia for 20 years) and i are arriving mid-Feb in Basel for a three month trial, just in time for Fasnacht.

I work as a marketing consultant - and will continue to work via email for my clients all over the world.

So 3 months in Switzerland..

Is it worth spending a time living in different areas of the country?
Is it worth me investigating a freelancer-professional visa for 3 months?
Any recommendations for short-term accommodation? (3 months airbnb is a bit $$$)
Basel vs Zurich?

I'm doing basic German lessons before i go - but i would like to organise conversational lessons once i'm there too..
