New student in Beijing !

Hi,

I know most people here have jobs and hence a real "life" but I have nothing to lose posting here !
I am a PhD student from Georgia Tech, Atlanta and I just arrived here at Beijing University. I will be doing research for one year with a professor here. I live at the edge of campus so Haidian district, not quite the usual area for internationals it seems.
I wanted to know if there is anyone around who would want to meet up/explore the city. I would really like to make some friends. I can use the subway to get to places but I still haven't quite grasped time/distance in terms of subway travel !
I am really looking forward to my year in China and would like to make some new friends along the way :)
