Traveling within China without passport? (Beijing)

I am currently applying for a residence permit and will send my passport to the Public Security Bureau next week for the final processing, which apparently takes 5 working days.

Do you know whether it is possible to travel (especially fly) within China during this time without my passport?

I heard from other expats that the PSB issues a receipt, which can be used for traveling within China and is generally accepted at airport security instead of the passport. Can you confirm this?
