where to live in if working in Lake Stechlin?... (Berlin)

Hi, two questions if anyone can give me help:
Im starting a PhD. The work will be done in Lake Stechlin, Newglobsow. The PhD is with Potsdam but I dont have to spend a lot time there but in the Lake Station. My husband and I think it might be a good idea to live in the "middle" between Berlin and the Lake (since he may have a chance to work in Berlin). Is this possible? Anyone knows if living in places like Oranienburg or in Pankow is smart in this situation?
Would 500euro make it for renting a flat (1bedroom)?
