Working with a spouse visa (Bogotá)

I currently am living in Colombia with my wife and am on a spouse visa. My question is can I work at say the U.S. embassy with a spouse visa. I heard that I have to get i converted over before I am allowed to work. Can you post steps on this process, do I need to leave the county to have this done or can I do it at the DAS.
