Leasing and insuring a car (Boston)

Hi there!

I've just moved from Berlin, Germany to Providence, RI and will live here for 2 years on a J-2 visa. I would need a car and I'd love to hear your "best practices" on how to get this done. Buying, leasing, renting? Which insurance takes German driving history into account? Which costs to expect? Anything is helpful! Thanks so much!
